Asiago
Goodbye our faithful friend.
Though hearts are heavy
the time has come to say goodbye.
...
Goodbye to our "Warren" door greeter;
With your prancing paws, wagging butt,
and the gravelly canine "hello you's."
Goodbye to your quircky character:
You asked your water to be refilled
by standing by the toilet.
You could hear a food wrapper three houses away,
and food drop across the house.
You ate tacos...around the lettuce,
and if you could lay on a wash cloth you thought you were spoiled.
You were.
You learned the hard way to never kiss me awake.
You taught us upfront...no cuddling at night.
And, can we ever forget the sight of you, prancing in the yard,
with a bone as big as yourself.
You shied away from sewer draines,
and hid with every storm,
and for some reason you growled at men in hats.
To my dying day I will swear you could spell the word walk.
Goodbye my midnight soldier.
You slept by my side in the lonely nights,
and calmed my sleepless fears.
Goodbye our handsome boy;
with your loving eyes, silky fur,
and the Fritto Chip scent uniquely yours.
I liked it.
Goodbye to your intelligent mind
that could pray for a treat
and ham up a dead dog's fall.
Goodbye to your gentle spirit,
your clock work bedtime hour,
and we'll never forget your morning hugs.
Goodbye our unrepentant kitchen thief,
that ate a smoked roast in less than two gulps
and carefully plucked ginger men from off our tree.
Like a son you shared the kids scoldings,
and hung your head in empathetic shame.
And I'm sorry to say...you were blamed for a lot.
Back in the day.
You ate shingles off the house,
begged like a homeless vagabond and
believed the Pizza man was dogs best friend.
You were a shameless bed hog,
pouted with the best,
and never learned that you weren't a lap dog.
You held bedside vigile when CB had the pox,
and threw your bowl at the boy when you didn't get fed.
You were Michael's faithful friend when the Bakery he lost;
sharing snacks, the couch and afternoon naps.
You have licked away many of my tears,
and waited by my side,
when I stayed up late.
I'll miss that.
You sat by the door with mournful eyes
through all the years we left you alone;
Faithfully waiting for our return.
When you knew you had been bad,
when you were afraid,
behind my legs you would always hide.
So now I must, the hard choice make.
For I feel your pain;
see the tiredness in your eyes.
It's OK, you're a "good boy".
Lay down your head,
close your eyes, it's time to go sleep.
We'll miss you.
You will always be in our hearts.
